Yeamlak Lijoch Foundation held its services enhancement launching program on March 8, 2023. The program was attended by YLF founders, leadership, members, supporters, and other dignitaries from different governmental and non-governmental bodies. The service enhancement undertaken by the foundation comprises a new location for its Yeamlak Lijock Aras Bet (YeAB) program. This new site gives the program a larger facility to extend more comprehensive care for additional disadvantaged mothers and their newborns.
Several dignitaries gave speeches during the ceremony. Some include Dr. Seblewongel Asrat, YLF Board Chair Person; W/ro Loko Godana, advisor to the Mayor of Addis Ababa on Social Affairs; Sr. Azeb, from Ministry of Health; W/ro Bizu, Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City Women & Children Office Head; Sr. Senayit Philipos, YLF Programme Coordinator; Ato Melkamu Dunfa, YLF Program Advisor; W/ro Nardos Mamo, YLF board member; Prof. Atalay Alem, Addis Ababa University; Ato Tefaye Yihune, YLF Strategic Planning Team Advisor; and Sr. Zenash, representing Woreda Health Centers.
Solome Dagnachew, one of the invited guests, gave a testimony that reads as follows:
“Yesterday, I had the honor of attending the launch of the Yeamlak Lijoch Foundation, a charity organization dedicated to helping young homeless mothers who gave birth at government health facilities. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than by supporting such a worthy cause.
During the tour, I was impressed with the facilities provided by the foundation. The rooms were clean and spacious, each with a bed and baby crib. There was a living room with a TV, a kitchen, and an office for the House Mother. The shelves were stocked with used clothes donated by volunteers.
At the launch event, we were moved by the story of how the foundation was founded. It began with a young boy who dreamed of helping poor people in Ethiopia. Sadly, he passed away at the young age of 23, but his parents found a note he wrote when he was 10, outlining his vision. They honored his memory by establishing the Yeamlak Lijoch Foundation, which has been helping homeless young mothers for the past two and a half years.
The midwives from the government health facilities shared heartbreaking stories of young girls who come alone to deliver their babies without anything. They take in these new mothers, providing them with shelter, clothing, and training to support themselves and their babies. They have no family or friends with them and often have nothing for the newborn. The midwives try to help in any way they can, but the girls are often frustrated and hopeless. That’s where Yeamlak Lijoch comes in.
One of the highlights of the foundation is the Mama Bag, which contains clothes for the mother and baby, diapers, wipes, lotions, and soap. Each bag costs 3000 Birr, and donations are greatly appreciated.
I am inspired by the work of Yeamlak Lijoch and encourage all of my friends to consider supporting this blessed project. You can donate to the Mama Bag or become a foundation member by paying the annual membership fee. It’s heartening to know that Yeamlak Lijoch is the only NGO working with mothers out of all the 300 NGOs listed in the country.
God bless you all, and let’s make a difference in these young mothers’ lives and their babies. Please get in touch with me if you’re interested in donating or becoming a member.
Salome”
